After four
months of planning, the first annual Cory’s Ride was
held at Rosedale Park in Lawrence Township, Mercer
County, New Jersey on June 5, 1999. Blessed with
beautiful sunny skies and low humidity, the ride went
off without any major glitches despite a large
day-of-event turnout. 134 pre-registered riders rode with
83 day-of-event cyclists for
a total of 217. Needless to say, all enjoyed a good
time!
Over the winter of 1999-2000, the
Anchor House Ride
for Runaways Planning Committee created a separate
subcommittee to run Cory’s Ride. Its first two
chairpersons were Debbie Hutchinson and Dave Brown, both
Ride Committee members. They oversaw the second Cory’s
Ride, utilizing the talents of a wonderful group of
volunteers selected from the large family of Anchor
House Ride participants past and present.
For its second year, Cory’s
Ride was blessed with a carbon copy of the previous
years weather. Riders participating in the 40-mile route
enjoyed a new course while the 20-mile tour of the
previous year remained unchanged. A total of 171 riders
participated in 2000, with 100 preregistered and the
remainder day-of-event. Unlike the first year, riders
were able to enjoy hot food after the ride because the
grill area had been reserved by the Mercer County Park
Commission for the day. The first four recipients of
scholarships funded by the Cory Golis / Anchor House
Scholarship fund were introduced to the riders during
the post-ride picnic.
The third and fourth year of
Cory’s Ride saw the venue moved to the Tall Cedars
Picnic Grove in Crosswicks, NJ. Jim Golis replaced Dave
Brown and joined Debbie Hutchinson as a co-chairperson.
The riders now had the option of a 20 or 50 mile route.
They once again enjoyed hot sandwiches and salads after
their ride and a generous supply of beverages donated by
the River Horse Brewery. The Thunder mascot, Boomer,
made a guest appearance in 2002. The fourth edition of
the ride produced the largest number of participants to
date, dispensed the greatest number of scholarships, and
raised $15,000 for the scholarship fund.
As this is written, the
Cory’s Ride committee is planning this year's
ride. Please keep supporting our cause and enjoy a day
of riding, friends and fun.
